The Chronicles of Nick: Infamous is a fantasy book about the struggle between good and evil. The main character, Nick, is a demon called the Malachai. The Malachai is the essence of evil and hatred. Nick, (like his father) is destined to destroy the world, unless he can control the evil inside. There is also a lot of good in Nick. Nick's mother is half human, half Setheroth, which is the essence of light, and everthing good. Although Nick is destined to destroy the world, he is the nicest person you will ever meet, and he's trying to keep it that way by not giving into his Malachai hatred.
Caleb is Nick's best friend. Caleb was saved by Nick's father, Adarian (also a Malachai). When was saved, he became enslaved by Adarian and bound to Adarian's power. This means that whoever kills Adarian and absorbs his powers will own Caleb, making his slavery endless, unless Adarian's powers are utterly destroyed. Caleb was sent to protect Nick until Adarian could return and kill Nick himself, to absorb Nick's powers. In protecting Nick, Caleb and Nick became best friends.
Kody is also an important character, she is Nick's girlfriend. Kody was sent from the future to kill Nick, in order stop Nick from becoming the Malachai and destroying the world. However, in meeting Nick, she fell in love with his kindness and selflessness for others. Instead of killing Nick, she tries to save him.
The main conflict starts with Nick's friend, Brenna. She is kindhearted and intelligent, but is accused of doing something heinous. Not only are hatred and lies are being spread about Brenna, but they are also being spread about other students as well, turning them against each other. In finding out the lies are being spread by a preternatural being, Nick has his work cut out for him.
The main theme of Infamous is friendship and trust. There are many examples of the friendship and trust between these friends. When the lies start about Brenna, she can't face the world, and is going to kill herself. Though Nick was grounded, he had an awful feeling and was compelled to check on Brenna across town. What he found was Brenna sobbing in her room. Nick told her "if they weren't jealous of you, they wouldn't attack you" and "they can only make you feel inferior, if you let them". Nick talked Brenna off the metaphoric ledge.
Another example of trust and friendship is seen between Nick and Caleb. Even though Nick knows that Caleb is bound to protect him, there is more than just duty between them. Thoughout Infamous, there are many altercations, and Caleb is always there, fighting alongside Nick. Nick knows that Caleb will always have his back. And lastly, Nick doesn't know why Kody was sent from the future, or what kind of being she is. Kody is Nick's anchor, and helps keep him grounded when he feels the Malachai hatred bulbbling up. Nick trusts that Kody would never betray or hurt him in anyway. These friends face many perils, and their trust and friendship protects them.
